Food Contact Material

ICQ has developed a specific experience in the evaluation of housewares. Our knowledge includes both food contact and quality (performance during use) of evaluation.

ICQ provide a competent legislative and analytical support for the evaluation of the compliance of articles intended to come in contact with food to national and international standards.

Materials and articles should be manufactured so that they do not transfer their constituent to food in quantity which could endanger human health, bring about unacceptable change in the composition of food or bring about a deterioration in the organoleptic characteristics thereof.

Tests such as “global migration” and “specific migration” are performed in order to verify the possible transfer of substances from the article end their nature (monomers, additives, solvents, catalysts, starting substances).

ICQ can perform chemical tests on any material (plastic, paper, glass, wood, steel, ceramic) used for the manufacture of different containers and packaging for food (glass, dishes, knives, pots, counter tops, flasks and mugs).

Main international legislative references:

  • Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 October 2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food and repealing Directives 80/590/EEC and 89/109/EEC;
  • Commission Directive 2007/72/EC of 6 August 2002 relating to plastic materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs and further amendments;
  • Directives 82/711/EC, 93/8/EC, 97/48/EC, 85/572/EC that set out procedures for analyses and food simulants to use during tests for the evaluation of the suitability to food contact;
  • Council Directive 84/500/EEC of 15 October 1984 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to ceramic articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs and further amendments;
  • Title 21 of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – USA.

In order to warrant the quality of domestic tools based on their specific use, ICQ proposes specific performance tests to support the claim present on the packaging of the end products.

Some tests performed are:

  • Mechanical resistance during use in dishwasher (example: 10 cycles, usury);
  • Mechanical resistance during use in microwave Functionality tests for various tools (example: thermal shock, resistance of tools handles).
